2005. Saffron splashy.

People arc up against it. It will be terrible. It will ruin the park. But as I stroll through, The Gates it is without a doubt one of the more magical things I’ve seen of late.

And I’m not expecting it to be. It catches me off guard. The day is sunny and crisp and golden and I am wearing a heavy coat and I can’t stop smiling. The snap of the material as the wind catches it. The tinging sound on the metal supports. People are happy.

Just happy. Life should always be this way.

Looking off, the orange river winds around and through the leafless trees. It is like happy paint seeping into a painful day.

When I see Christo and his wife, walking through the crowd and soaking up people’s enjoyment, I feel like I’ve seen royalty.

Sometimes, I am surprised by how I react to things.
